A Study To Evaluate The Drug Utilization Pattern In The Pharmacotherapy Of Epilepsy At Government Hospital With Emphasis On Adverse Effects

Abstract: Introduction: Epilepsy is a disorder of the brain which is characterized by an enduringpredisposition to generate epileptic seizures. Anti-epileptic drugs (AEDs) are the primary therapeutic modes for epileptic patients and have beendemonstrated to control seizure. Objective: The objective of this study was to evaluate drug utilization pattern in the pharmacotherapy of epilepsy at government hospital with emphasis on adverse effects. Material and Methods: This was a comparative, prospective and observational study conducted on 300 patients of either gender at Government Medical College and Super-facility Hospital, Azamgarh. Results: Our study revealed male predominance over female. Patient with age group of 31-43 were more prone to epilepsy. Total 199(66.33%) patients were diagnosed with generalized seizure.Nausea & Vomiting were most commonly observed ADRs.Total 86.56% of drugs were prescribed with generic name. Phenobarbitone was most commonly prescribed drugs for treatment of epilepsy.Avg. cost for 6months of epileptic treatment was 25435.77. Average cost per prescription was Rs. 432. Conclusion: The findings of the present studywill be helpful in making common guidelinesfor epilepsy management and alsoin meticulous planning in order to reduce the expenditures bear by the suffererswith utmost effective treatment.
