Awareness of Micronutrient Deficiency in India

Author: SHARWINI BASKAR, DR.PREETHA.S, DR.LAVANYA PRATHAP
Abstract: In recent days many health problems affect children and adults due to changes in lifestyle and food habits. The health problems can be due to the genetic makeup of an individual or can be due to the surrounding environment. The prevalence of micronutrient deficiency is the major cause of poor health and body development in many developing countries in Asia. Malnutrition arises due to a lack of essential nutrients in the body due to less dietary intake or can also be due to micronutrient deficiency. Micronutrient deficiency has an important part in the cycle of malnutrition. Micronutrient deficiency is due to the lack of one or more essential micronutrients that are needed for the growth and development of the body. The essential micronutrients are iodine, iron, zinc, calcium, fluorine, and vitamin. Due to the lack of nutritional food or rapid loss of nutrients through feces or vomit, it causes 10% of children’s death. This study is to assess the knowledge and awareness of micronutrient deficiency among the general population in India. A cross-sectional survey was conducted among the general population, which included a set of self-developed questionnaires. The data was collected and analyzed, results were tabulated. 38.81% are not aware that nutritional diet includes micronutrients, 41.79% of the population are not aware of essential micronutrients, 52.24% have no idea about the main micronutrient which causes micronutrient deficiency. 38.8% of the population lack awareness of nutritional diet which can further lead to inadequate nutrient intake which can cause micronutrient deficiency. The education of micronutrients to mothers can prevent micronutrient deficiency in children.
