Evaluating the Incidence of Myofascial Pain Dysfunction Syndrome Among Chennai City Population

Abstract: This study is aimed to determine the incidence of myofascial pain dysfunction syndrome among Chennai city population. This retrospective study involved a total of 62 patients out of which 28 were female and 33 were male who reported to the Oral Surgery Clinic at Department of Oral Surgery, Saveetha Dental College, Chennai between the year June 2019-March 2020. Parameters such as age, gender, area of pain, type of physical therapy, type of pharmacotherapy, were evaluated and assessed by a single examiner and reviewed by 2 independent investigators. In this study it was observed that the incidence of Myofascial Pain Dysfunction Syndrome among Chennai City Population was 34.43%.The age group frequently affected was between 31-40 years and there seemed to be a significant male predilection. All the patients were treated conservatively with the use of physical therapy and self management, which mainly consisted of alternate warm and cold compression thrice a day for 1 week along with soft diet and jaw stretching exercises as adjunctive therapy in some cases. Within the limits of this study, the incidence of Myofascial Pain Dysfunction Syndrome among Temporomandibular Joint Disorders in Chennai City population is significant, the incidence being the second most frequently affecting disorder after disc-condyle disorder.
