Knowledge Attitude and Practice Regarding Probiotics Among General Population- A Questionnaire Survey

Abstract: Probiotics are live microorganisms promoted to help increase and restore gut flora and other health benefits. The increasing demand in order to maintain a healthy life in an easier way has demanded the manufacturing and increase in the use of probiotics. This study was conducted in order to associate the knowledge about probiotics in health and disease among the general public and also to bring about awareness of the dangerous outcome when taken into diet without proper guidance. The aim is to study the extent of knowledge about probiotics among the general public, to assess the level of knowledge, attitude, selection and consumption of probiotics among the general public. A set of questionnaires were developed and circulated among the public in relation to the knowledge about probiotics in health and disease. A total of 109 responses were taken and the data was collected and analyzed. The results were compiled and statistical analyses were done with the help of SPSS software latest version and to check the association Chi-square test was done to check association and p value less than 0.05 was said to be statistically significant.. The results showed that people aren’t much aware about the term probiotic but still consume it by the advertisements projected and recommended through friends and family members without understanding the adverse effects caused. This study concludes that the general public are not much aware about the side effects of probiotics but are consuming it in their daily diet through self prescribing and advertisement seen. Awareness must be brought in order to explain the general public about the side effects and other potential benefits.
