Knowledge and Awareness of First Aid Skills Among Dental Students-A Survey

Abstract: First aid can be defined as the emergency or an initial treatment of illness or injury in order to maintain life, to ease pain and to prevent deterioration of the patient's condition until professional medical help can be obtained.The knowledge which is required for handling an emergency without hospital setting at the site of the accident or emergency may not be sufficient as most of dental schools do not have formal first aid training in the teaching curriculum. Basic life support (BLS) includes recognition of signs of sudden cardiac arrest, heart attack, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and defibrillation with an automated external defibrillator. It is very important that every person in the community knows about First aid to save lives and improve the quality of community health.The aim of our study was to assess the awareness and knowledge about First aid skills among dental students.This was a prospective cross sectional questionnaire observational study The sample size was 115 students pursuing dental science in various dental colleges. Sampling method used was convenient sampling. Data collection software used was google forms. Statistical tests used were descriptive statistics and chi square tests.P value less than 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Study groups in our study were BDS (48.7%), Intern (37%), MDS (19.1%). In our study, 52.17% had knowledge of first aid 73.9 % felt the need for training. MDS This study concludes that M.D.S Students have higher knowledge and awareness about first aid skills. In general, knowledge and awareness regarding first aid skills were moderate. Future scope of this study is to create awareness and importance of first aid skills.
