Knowledge and Awareness About Aichmophobia In Dental Students-A Survey

Abstract: In health care settings, fear of injections is a common finding and approximately 10% of patients report an excessive fear of needles resulting in significance avoidance , distress or impairment. Thus , the present study determines symptoms, factors, management and extent of avoidance of dental health care by those with fear of needles, therefore bringing greater awareness of this condition to dental health professionals. A cross sectional study was conducted among dental students using questionnaires through google forms. The questionnaire consists of 21 questions were framed based on knowledge and awareness about aichmophobia and response received from 100 participants. In this survey, about 52.43% students experienced fear of needles whereas 47.57% have not experienced it. Majority of students reported because of nearby hospitals or clinics as the reason for Aichmophobia. About 60.19% of students were aware that aichmophobia is more common in females than in males. More students were aware that fear of needles was common in dental treatments. About 60.19% students reported that their friends and relatives had avoided dental treatment because of needle phobia. The procedure of needle injection is a routine procedure in the dental clinics and hospitals for giving anesthesia to the patient. Therefore this survey creates awareness among dental students to manage such aichmophobia patients.
