Knowledge and Awareness of Parents About Universal Immunisation Program and Optional Vaccines in South Indian Population

Author: MOULISHREE , K.R.DON
Abstract: Vaccines are one of the efficient inventions protecting the children's health. Public health universal immunisation program aims to facilitate a list of mandatory vaccines for certain age of children to cover their full immunisation to prevent the onset of childhood disease. There are recommended optional vaccines which reduce the susceptibility of certain diseases. The aim of the study was to determine the knowledge and awareness of parents towards UIP and spread awareness about the same. A set of self evaluable questionnaires were made. The questions were uploaded in Google form link and data collected by surveying among 200 active participants of the south indian parents population. Then the data collected was analysed, manipulated and encrypted in SPSS software where the results were summarised by chi square analysis. P value <0.05 was considered statistically significant with a confidence level 95%. About 19.74% of the population is confident, 49.34% population was somewhat sure regarding their awareness towards vaccines. So, it was found that there exists better knowledge regarding UIP and optional vaccines among parents in the south indian population where undergraduate parents tend to have more knowledge regarding the vaccines on comparing with the highest educational qualification criteria. Further studies regarding the importance of optional vaccines, the balance between its positive and negative effects, betterment of children's health due to UIP should be focussed and awareness spread about the same.
