Awareness of Passive Smoking Risks in Chronic Smokers - A Social Measure

Author: CASILDA SUSHANTHI.L, ABILASHA RAMASUBRAMANIAN, HANNAH.R, PRATIBHA RAMANI, GHEENA.S
Abstract: Tobacco products are used by an estimated 1.3 billion people world-wide, around which 80% belong to low income or developing countries. Tobacco use has a detrimental effect on health and also affects the economy of developing countries. Tobacco contains Nicotine that causes cardiovascular and respiratory diseases. Active smokers are individuals who inhale tobacco smoke directly. Passive smoking is the inhalation of smoke, called secondhand smoke on environmental tobacco smoke, by persons other than intended active smokers. The present study was conducted to assess the knowledge of passive smoking risk in chronic smokers. A questionnaire-based survey of 25 questions with a study population of 210 chronic smokers was conducted. The responses were tabulated and analysed.Out of 210 responses, 75.2% were males. 67% of respondents were aware of passive smoking. 81% were aware of health hazards caused by passive smoking and more than 80% said they would not quit smoking. Despite the increased level of knowledge about passive smoking risks, smokers were not willing to quit smoking. Detailed tobacco counselling program and increasing the prices of cigarette packages might reduce the incidence of smoking habit. More awareness programmes and webinars on the harmful effects of tobacco must be instilled in them to reform and recoup from the habit.
