Awareness Regarding Documentation of Patient Cases Among Dental Students and Practitioners. - A Survey

Author: HARSH KASABWALA, SHUBHABRATA MAITI
Abstract: Documentation of clinical cases has become an integral part of dental practice. . It is necessary for most of the dental students and practitioners to be aware of this habit and should incorporate it in their curriculum and practice. The aim of this study was to evaluate the knowledge and awareness regarding documentation of clinical cases among dental students and practitioners. An online questionnaire was prepared and was sent to 200 dental students and 100 practitioners. A total of 127 responses were received. The questionnaire was designed in a way wherein the responses would reflect the amount of awareness the study population would have regarding documenting cases. Chi square test and Pearson correlation analysis were used. It was found that a fair number of dental practitioners were aware regarding the importance of documenting their cases whereas on the other hand there were a handful of practitioners who did not document their cases at all. The reason for this could be due to low awareness levels and the inability of the practitioners to realize the importance of documentation. Though the practice of documentation is on a rise among the dental practitioners, it is not correctly and religiously followed by them. Routine seminars and workshops should be conducted for the clinicians wherein they are taught about the newest techniques and various methods to document their cases and to maintain patient records.
