The purpose of this article is to review the relevant literature and to present the various methods of identification (in vitro and invivo) of accessory canals. The determination of the location of the accessory canals is of utmost importance to the clinician prior to any procedures. Failure to identify anatomical variations can complicate surgery and result in adverse consequences. The detection of these anatomical variations can only be achieved in clinical practice by radiography and other advanced modalities. To date, all previous radiographic studies have utilized two-dimensional radiography, mostly conventional radiographs. Endodontists detect and negotiate accessory canals with ultrasonic instruments ,CBCT and microscopes.
