Awareness on Newer Implant Biomaterials Among Undergraduate Dental Students - A Questionnaire Survey

Author: CHITHRALEKHA , DR.REVATHI DURAISAMY, DHANRAJ GANAPATHY
Abstract: Appropriate selection of the implant biomaterial is a key factor for long term success of implants. The biologic environment does not accept completely any material so to optimize biologic performance, implants should be selected to reduce the negative biologic response while maintaining adequate function. Every clinician should always gain a thorough knowledge about the different biomaterials used for the dental implants. The aim of the study was to assess the knowledge about the newer implant materials among undergraduate students of saveetha dental college. A questionnaire of 10 questions were made and circulated through various social media platforms. There were 150 respondents in the survey conducted. The study was carried out within a time period of December 2019 to March 2020. Ethical approval was obtained from the scientific review board. The collected data was compiled, reviewed, tabulated, and exported to SPSS software for statistical analysis. Through the survey we found that about 80% of the students who participated in the survey were aware about the biomaterials that we currently use in implant dentistry. But when it came to newer developments, like straumann roxolid and hydroxyapatite (HA) coated implants, it was evaluated that 47% and 54% of the students were not aware of them respectively. Few of the parameters that were compared were found to be statistically significant henceforth reinforcing its importance clinically. The students participated in the survey had a remarkable knowledge about the implant biomaterials available in the industry, but the awareness about few parameters were found to be highly limited to only one group of students when compared to the others.
