Impact of Different Methods of School Dental Health Education on Oral Health-Related Knowledge, Attitude and Practice Behaviour.

Abstract: Oral health is an essential component of general health. Poor oral health in children restricts school activity days, hinders their school performance and reduces their quality of life. Promotion of oral health in childhood can result in a positive impact on the holistic health of an individual for a lifetime. School is one of the widest channels to reach out to children and their families. Schools provide a useful platform for children to raise their health-related behaviors. Over one billion children can be reached across the globe through schools ( and therefore schools have been targeted to enhance the oral health practices of children. School dental health education aims to improve oral-health-related knowledge, attitude, practice behavior of children and hence their overall quality of life. Two schools out of seven were selected for this study, children of age group 6 to 12 were selected for this study. The two modes of dental health education chosen for this study was chalk and talk and video demonstration. The plaque index and OHIS index was recorded and assessed at different dates with equal intervals. Majority of the children of the age group 6-8 years had an OHIS score of 0.0-0.6 (Good), in the age group of 8-10 years and 10-12 years the majority of the children had an OHIS score of 0.7 - 1.8 (Fair) as shown in fig 4. Pearson Chi-square test was 39.429a and the p-value was 0.000. Within the limitations of our study we found that Video mode of education had a statistically higher impact on oral hygiene compared to chalk and talk method.
