Taste sensation is produced when substance in the mouth reacts chemically with the taste receptor cells located on taste buds in the tongue. Tobacco/ Nicotine is a risk factor that contributes to an impaired taste in humans.Impaired taste perception has an impact on quality of life. The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the taste perception among smokers and non smokers.A comparative study was conducted to assess and compare taste identification time among 40 patients (20 smokers and 20 non smokers) visiting the outpatient of saveetha dental college. Time taken for taste perception was noted. Statistical analysis was done using one way ANOVA analysis to compare the mean values among different groups. Chi square analysis was also done to find the association between age groups and types of taste. It was noted that the time taken for the perception of all tastes is longer for the case (smokers) compared to the control group except for bitter taste. It was found that the average taste identification time was lower for smokers than non smokers for bitter taste. It was found that there was a significant difference between different tastes for non smokers p<0.001(p<0.05) and smokers p<0.000(p<0.05) . Within the limitations of this study it was seen that taste perception time is higher among the smokers compared to non smokers.
