Effect Of Hard Water On Properties Of Glass Ionomer Cement- An In Vitro Study

Author: K.AJITH KAMATH, IFFAT NASIM
Abstract: Water is essential for hydration and therefore, for life. The source and nature of water hence plays a crucial role in determining the quality of life. In Dentistry, several Dental cements and compounds are used for restoring decayed or malformed teeth. The properties of these materials are influenced by varying factors. The aim of the study was to assess the effect of Hard water on the surface roughness, Knoop hardness and color stability of Type II Glass Ionomer Cement. Sixty cylindrical test specimens (Type II GIC), were custom fabricated. The samples were randomly separated into 3 groups(n=20); Hard water group, Potable water group, Deionized water group. The specimens were kept immersed in the respective water groups for a specified amount of time and were later immersed in artificial saliva. These cycles were repeated several times. The specimens were then subjected to testing. Values were obtained, and statistical analysis was done. Results showed that there was a negligible color change in all the specimens(p>0.05). Knoop Hardness values of the restorative material immersed in hard water was significantly lesser(p<0.05). The specimen immersed in hard water showed increased roughness(p<0.05).The study hence concluded, proving that hard water had a significant effect on the physical properties of the set restorative material. Further studies are necessary to study these effects in-vivo.
