Dental impression is a crucial part of the process of constructing a well-fitting prosthesis. In the clinical scenario, impressions can act as a vehicle for the transfer of bacteria and fungi. Autoclave sterilization and microwave sterilization has been suggested as the effective methods for the disinfection of elastomeric impression. Polyvinyl siloxanes (PVS) are currently considered to reproduce the greatest detail of all the impression materials. The accuracy of impression material is dependent on its dimensional stability. The aim of this survey was to study the level of awareness among postgraduates and undergraduates about autoclavable polyvinyl siloxane elastomeric impression material (addition silicone). This was a cross - sectional questionnaire based study, which was conducted in Saveetha Dental College among postgraduates and undergraduates. Ethical approval was given by the Institutional ethical committee and a Predesigned validated questionnaire was used to assess the awareness of autoclavable polyvinyl siloxane elastomeric impression material. A validated and structured questionnaire containing 12 questions was framed and it was circulated through an online forum. The sample size was 100 people and the results were tabulated in the excel sheet and imported to SPSS software. The statistical test used was the Chi square test. The result shows that 89% of the respondents are aware of Polyvinyl siloxane impression material and the association was statistically not significant p value: 0.213 (>0.05), 89% of the respondents are aware that 2% glutaraldehyde is used for disinfecting Polyvinyl siloxane and association was statistically not significant p value: 0.213 (>0.05), nearly 89% of respondents are aware that impression material has to be disinfected and the association was statistically not significant p value: 0.213 (>0.05). Within the limitation of the study, it can be observed that knowledge and awareness among postgraduates was higher when compared to undergraduates.
