Awareness of sharp teeth as an etiological factor for oral cancer-A survey among dental students.

Abstract: Background: Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma is one of the most common malignancies affecting the Oral Cavity. According to the recent epidemiological statistics , the age standardized incidence rates of lip, oral cavity cancer in India is 9.1. It most commonly starts as one of the many potentially malignant disorders, undergoes dysplastic changes and transforms into malignancy. If detected at early stages it can be treated and cured. Most often, the signs indicating the presence of oral cancer are detected by dentists before the symptoms worsen or complications set in (1) For this reason, knowledge and understanding of these manifestations are essential for dentists. Main etiological factors for oral cancer are tobacco and alcohol,but since cancer is multifactorial; genetics and epigenetic causes also play a role. Materials and method: A survey among dental students was conducted by circulating a questionnaire through an online survey planet link. The obtained results were statistically analysed using the SPSS software. Result: The results were collected and analysed. Pie charts and bar graphs of chi square analysis were analysed. It was found that most of the students were aware of signs and symptoms of oral cancer. Conclusion: Dental science students are aware of all the risk factors Of oral cancer.
