The aim of this study is to evaluate the degree of canine rotation and the amount of molar and canine tipping that occurred during individual canine retraction with elastomeric chain and NiTi coil spring using digital models. A split mouth design, randomized control trial with a sample size of 7 patients 14 quadrants with a G power of 90. The patients were divided into two groups: Group A with elastomeric chain on the right side and coil spring on the left and GROUP B with elastomeric chain on the left side and NiTi coil spring on the right side. A lottery method was carried out prior to the start of the study and the patients were randomly allotted into either Group A or Group B. Lateral cephalogram OPG, photographs were taken before the start of the canine retraction. Intra-oral scan using Medit scanner was taken and digital models using 3Shape imaging software (ORTHOANALYSER) were made. Digital models were used to measure canine rotation. The canine rotation was measured between the line joining the distal and mesial surface of the canine to the line extending from the midpalatal suture. The difference in this angle between the pre and post canine retraction gave the amount of rotation occurred during retraction. To analyze the inclination of canine, lateral cephalometric radiographs were taken before and after canine retraction. The vertical jigs on the canine brackets and molar tubes represented the long axis of teeth to evaluate the angulation of canine and molar respectively. The amount of canine tipping was measured with reference to the palatal plane (ANS-PNS) using ANS as the reference point. The amount of canine tipping was calculated by the difference of tip between the jig in pre- and post-retraction cephalometric radiographs. The same was done for molar angulation. The mean canine rotation for elastomeric chain was 1.5° from the start to the end of canine retraction however the mean canine rotation for NiTi coil spring was higher (8.81°) from the start of canine retraction to the end of canine retraction which was statistically significant (p value 0.04). The mean change in canine angulation (distal tipping) for the elastomeric chain was 3.74 degrees and that for NiTi coil spring was 3.89 degrees. The mean change in the molar angulation for elastomeri chain was 1.1 degrees and the mean change in molar angulation for NiTi coil spring was 0.89 degrees. Thus it was observed that the molar (p value of 0.38) and canine angulation (p value of 0.72) was minimal for both the groups and the difference noted between both the groups was not statistically significant. CONCLUSION: There was a significant difference in degree of canine rotation pre and post canine retraction with more rotation seen with NiTi coil spring (8.81±0.01). There was no significant difference in the canine and molar angulation pre and post canine retraction with elastomeric chains and NiTi coil spring.
