Author: DR.VIVEK.D.MENON , DR.M R MUTHUSEKHAR
Abstract: Aim:To study the awareness of Basic Life Support (BLS) among dental students in Chennai. Materials and methods:This cross-sectional study was conducted by assessing responses to 19 selected questions pertaining to BLS among dental students in Chennai. A questionnaire with 19 questions regarding the awareness and skills involved in BLS was used to assess the levels of awareness of BLS and its practical knowledge. The aspects on which they were interrogated were about the abbreviation of BLS, AED and EMS (Emergency Medical Service), sequential steps in BLS, assessment and resuscitation techniques with regard to airway, breathing, circulation in unresponsive victims of different age groups, techniques regarding removal of foreign body obstruction.RESULTS: In this study one hundred responders were included, Sadly, none of our respondents had complete knowledge 9about BLS. Among the students who participated,98% gave the correct answer as basic life support when asked about BLS full form.64% gave the correct answer as centre of the chest when asked about the location of chest compression in adults.58% gave the correct answer as an automated external defibrillator when asked about the full form of AED.71% gave the correct answer as emergency medical services when asked about the full form of EMS.DISCUSSION:Based on the results we can see that not many dental students have thorough knowledge about Basic Life Support and handling Emergencies this could be due to lack of emphasis on life saving protocols in the students curriculum. It is now important to standardise training in BLS and make it a mandatory component for all dental, medical, nursing and paramedical undergraduate curriculums. It is also equally important that school children, teachers, public and the community on the whole be taught the facts of first aid and BLS.CONCLUSION:To ensure better and safer healthcare, it is essential for all dental practitioners to be well versed with BLS.
