A Case Control Study Of Risk Factors Associated With Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease (ASCVD) On Patients In Bali Island

Author: , MADE KRISNA ADI JAYA, DEWA AYU SWASTINI
Abstract: Introduction: Cardiovascular disease is still the number one killer disease in the world with a mortality rate that is always increasing every year. A heart attack will always begin with atherosclerosis. Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) is a chronic inflammatory process in blood vessels characterized by thickening of the walls of the blood vessels. On the island of Bali, there is not enough evidence regarding what risk factors dominate the incidence of ASCVD. So it is necessary to conduct a study in the hope that the study results can provide an overview for clinicians in health care facilities to intervene in the dominant risk factors that cause ASCVD. Objective: This study aims to determine the dominant risk factors for ASCVD on patients in Bali Island. Methods: The case-control study design was carried out on 200 subjects who had a high risk of cardiovascular disease in the January-December 2019 period in two hospitals with heart disease unit facilities on the island of Bali. Exposure tracing was performed retrospectively through patient medical records. Odds ratio analysis with confidence interval 95% was conducted to test the significance of exposure as an influencing risk factor. Results: Uncontrolled lipid profile (OR=17.2), alcohol consumption (OR=9.4), smoking (OR=7.0), overweight (OR=6.1), uncontrolled fasting blood glucose (OR=6.0), elderly patient (OR=2.7), and uncontrolled blood pressure (OR=2.2) are risk factors associated with ASCVD (p <0.05). Conclusion: All these risk factors, except age, must be controlled immediately to prevent the development of more severe heart disease.
