Chest trauma during conflict in Baghdad: Retrospective study

Abstract:

Background: Trauma is the major health problem in Iraq, recently, due to exposure to continuous conflict for the last decades.
Aim: the main aim of the present paper is to report on patients with chest trauma underwent thoracotomy. Patients and methods: A review of a total 53 case file of patients managed by thoracotomy between January 2014 and January 2016 in Ghazi Al-Hariri teaching surgical specialties hospital, department of thoracic and vascular surgery, demographic data and management steps were requested.
Results: Male sex was dominating (5 times the female).The peak age of patients was 3rddecade. Only 1(1.8%) was below 10 years and 3 patients (5.66%) in the 6th decade. Penetrating and blunt chest trauma was 92.5% and 7.5% respectively. Of penetrating injuries, there were 57.1%, 28.6%, and 14.3% for Bullets, shells and stab wound respectively.
Conclusion: Penetrating chest trauma found to be the commonest cause for thoracotomy in which young male were involved more common than females and other age group. The commonest indication for thoracotomy was an initial drain of more than 1500ml of blood after chest tube insertion, with lung injury is the most common operative finding.
