Status Of Oral Hygiene Among Physically Challenged People In Madurai District

Abstract:

Oral hygiene is the practice of keeping one’s mouth clean and free of diseases by brushing and cleaning between the teeth. This prevents one from dental diseases and bad breath. In physically challenged people their oral hygiene differs with their dietary habits and cleaning methods. The unhealthy oral hygiene can also lead to cardiac problems , stroke , diabetes and other serious health problems. A descriptive survey was conducted among physically challenged people using a questionnaire in a home of different impairments in Madurai district. The questionnaire consists of 12 questions based on oral hygiene and normal routine of their lives. The subjects consist of 100 physically challenged people with different impairments and those were explained about their study. The data was analysed statistically. In this survey about 57.5% were female and 42.5%were male they were of different ages. Out of those 53.3% were affected by complications such as caries and 46.7% don’t have complications. Here 55.8% of them visit the dentist periodically and 44.2% don’t visit periodically. Among the participants persons with visual impairment was more and were about 42.5%, those with hearing impairment was 22.5% and 35% of them were handicapped. These subjects are incapable of visiting dentists those who treat specially for disabled persons as the result came to be less when that was asked. Thus according to the above observation it can be concluded that oral hygiene among physically challenged people is not poor and it is also not appreciable. Therefore as a dentist awareness should be provided and they should be enhanced to maintain a good
oral hygienic condition. The aim of the study is To assess the status of oral hygiene among physically challenged people in Madurai district.
