Abstract: The aim of this study is to compare the soft tissue healing obtained by the usage of two different type oral therapeutic gel following dental implant surgery. This randomised control clinical study was carried out on patients who received dental implant placement at department of Implantology, Saveetha dental college & Hospital from the period MAY2018- MAY2019.Following pre- operative assessment a total of 20 patients who were systemically healthy who underwent dental implant placement were included in this study. Single implant placement with flap elevation, with or without relieving incision were included in the study. The patients were divided into two groups. Group A had 10 patients who were advised to use Blue M gel(oxygen enriched gel). Group B had 10 patients who were advised to use Hexigel (1% chlorhexidine gel )topical application. The topical gel was advised by the patients to be used twice daily on the implant placement site for a period of one week. Early wound healing index was used to assess the rate of soft tissue healing.Patient’s were recalled at 1st day(24 hours) and on the 7th day and a trained examiner assessed early wound healing using the EHS index (Early wound healing index).Parameters assessed were clinical signs of re-epithelization (CSR),clinical signs of haemostasis (CSH),clinical signs of inflammation (CSI). The Data was analysed using SPSS version 23.0. Mann – Whitney U was done to compare the differences between the groups. When comparing between the two groups, there was no statistically significant difference in the EHS score values on day one between the blue m gel group and the Chlorhexidine group. ( p value - 0.272).Similarly there was no statistically significant difference in the EHS score values on the seventh day between the blue m gel group and the Chlorhexidine group. ( p value - 0.245)Thus within the limitations of the present study, there was no statistically significant differences in the early wound healing index scores between the chlorhexidine gel and blue m gel( oxygen enriched gel), however chlorhexidine showed higher mean EHS scores when compared with blue m gel. The active ingredients such as Sodium perborate,Honey and Xylitol Oxygen molecules (O2 ) present in the gel may result in anti inflammatory and anti bacterial effect on the tissues which can modulate the wound healing process. However chlorhexidine gel still remains the gold standard till date.
