Knowledge and awareness about relationship between diabetes mellitus and periodontal disease among general population- Survey

Abstract: Diabetes mellitus is one of the major public health problems. Association of diabetes and periodontitis is widely proven and can influence each other in the development and progression of the disease and its complications, which are largely preventable. The aim of the present study was to assess the awareness of the public regarding the inter bet between periodontal disease and diabetes. This was a cross-sectional descriptive survey with a sample size of 500 and was conducted both online and personally. The study was conducted from october 2019 to march 2020. Questionnaire consisting of 10 questions related to bidirectional link between periodontitis and diabetes along with demographic details were used , the responses were then tabulated in statistical analysis was done using SPSS software. Descriptive statistics in the form of percentages and ratios was performed for all the variables and chi-square test was used to detect significant associations among categorical variables. While analysing the various responses against questions related to diabetes and periodontitis the responses were varied. Majority were unaware of the influence of diabetes on periodontal health and periodontitis on diabetes control. There were no statistically significant associations between gender, occupational status, socioeconomic status and awareness.
