Background: Oral and Maxillofacial surgery is one of the most rapidly expanding specialties in India. There is however a very poor understanding of the scope of the specialty. Aim: To ?nd out the awareness of the oral and maxillofacial surgical procedures among the general population Materials and methods: A questionnaire of 15 questions was formulated and circulated via electronic media among the general population of the southern part of India. Results:Trauma and facial deformity correction were recognized to be mainly treated by maxillofacial surgeons, the other maxillofacial problems were poorly recognized to be treated by our specialty Conclusion : From the above survey majority of the population are not aware of the maxillofacial surgical procedures. Majority of the people are considered as this branch of dentistry is mainly confined to the extraction of teeth and fractures. This study emphasises on the importance of awareness among the general population and the role of media which helps in creating awareness in the community.
