Background: CT Scan is a modality of choice since the existence of Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS). Patients get a nasal decongestant and nose blowing Pre-FESS CT Scan.
Objectives: Analyzing the difference of the effect of topical nasal decongestant by applying a nasal tampon on Pre-FESS CT Scan preparation.
Methods: This study is a clinical trial pre – posttest design. Subjects were evaluated twice i.e. before and after the application of a topical decongestant. The data obtained were analyzed using parametric Paired T-Test and non-parametric Wilcoxon and Mc Nemar Test.
Results: Ostium which had been non patent before preparation turned into patent with significant p value (< 0.05). The diameter of the paranasal sinus ostium before and after the application of a topical nasal decongestant on Pre-FESS CT Scan showed a significant p value (<0.05) in all paranasal sinus ostium.
Conclusion: Significant differences were obtained in non-patent osteomeatal patency in Pre-FESS CT Scan, compared to the after-application of topical nasal decongestant with nasal tampon. Significant difference was also obtained in the diameter of paranasal sinus ostium. Decongestants carry an important role in eliminating reversible mucosal abnormalities.
