Introduction: Deficiency of micronutrients is more common in elderly population and inadequate intake of vitamin folic acid may cause megaloblastic anaemia. Studies shows that prevalance of folate deficiency was 52.2% in the lower income group. However, limited data is available on the prevalence of folic acid deficiency amongst adults. Hence this present study was aimed to evaluate the status of serum folate in the population aged above 60 years
Materials and methods: A total of 100 healthy individuals with mean age 67.17± 5.85 years were selected for the study. Demographical details, dietary habits, and symptoms related to its deficiency were taken with a questionnaire.
Results: The serum folate was estimated and it has been observed that folic acid level were significantly decreasing with age (P=0.015) and serum folate level was strongly correlated with its dietary intake (R = 0.773).
Conclusion: In spite of insignificant association of folate level with gender, religion, economic status, dietary pattern, alcohol consumption and with deficiency symptoms, folic acid appears to be a greater concern for the elderly population.
