The plant kingdom has many species of plants with lot of medicinal value which are yet to be discovered and large numbers of plants are constantly being screened for their phytochemical and pharmacological value in addition to the already exploited ones. Ziziphus rugosa is one of the wild plant belonging to the family Rhamnaceae, traditional claims reported that it is used in the treatment of ulcer, as astringent and as antidiarrhoeal. The plant bark is also proved for its antidiabetic, antifungal, analgesic and anti-inflammatory activities. However, there has been no report on the active components of this plant. The objective of the present study is to evaluate the phytochemical and GC-MS analysis of the Ziziphus rugosa bark. From phytochemical screening, ethanolic extract of bark was found to be rich in phytochemicals, flavonoid content (91.24±4.624 mgQEg-1) and phenolic content (493.42±8.23 mgGAEg-1). Fifteen compounds were identified from GC-MS analysis with proved pharmacological activity. These results suggest that Z. rugosa bark can be subjected to isolation, purification and characterization of the promising molecules responsible for the activity of this plant.
