Background: Lack of adherence to disease modifying treatment (DMT) can increase the risk of Multiple sclerosis (MS) relapse and even progression which means a higher economic burden to the patient and to insurance companies. This study aimed to assess the adherence to different DMT among Iraqi MS patients.
Methods: A cross sectional study for a convenient sample of 149 relapsing remitting MS patients was conducted from July to September 2018 in the MS clinic at Baghdad teaching hospital, Baghdad, Iraq. Adherence to DMT was assessed by asking the participated patients to self-report their adherence to the current DMT in the previous 3 months according to the Medication adherence questionnaire – Arabic version.
Results: Adherence to DMT was optimum for only 47% of participants. RRMS were more adherent to the second line DMT especially those that administered intravenously (IV). On the other hand, other factors such as gender, age and educational level of participants do not significantly improve the adherence to DMT.
Conclusion: In RRMS patients, adherence to DMT was suboptimal, which is improved by intravenous DMT.
