Pharmacognostic and phytochemical investigation of Dracaena terniflora Roxb: A folklore medicinal plant

In the present study, the entire plant of Dracaena terniflora Roxb. belonging to family Liliaceae was subjected to basic pharmacognostic examinations like morphological, and histological evaluations, physicochemical evaluation including ash values, extractive values, heavy metal analysis and preliminary phytochemical screening. Pharmacognostic investigation of the entire plant of Dracaena terniflora Roxb. showed the presence of dracaenoid thickening in the stem. Qualitative chemical examinations of various extracts and fractions of roots and aerial parts of Dracaena terniflora Roxb. report the presence of alkaloids, steroids, flavonoids, tannins, and carbohydrates, proteins, terpenoids, coumarins etc and shows the absence of glycosides on both root and aerial part. These observations will enable to standardize the botanical identification of the drug in its crude form.
