Structured rating scales were used in the study to cover all the aspects of an aggressive episode including nature,
severity and methods used to manage the incident.Along with the use of structured rating scales, the study had
also included data which was obtained from interviews with the patient, staff and family member regarding the
aggressive episode. A structured and comprehensive evaluation of premorbid factors, co-morbidity and severity of
psychotic symptoms could not be undertaken due to short length of stay and changeable clinical picture. There is a
need to conduct more studies in this field in an Indian setting as this has implications in routine clinical practice
related to safety issues in the ward and its impact on the property and person especially due to lesser staff and
more crowded wards unlike the west.A better reporting system of aggression should be in place in the wards so
that all types of aggression are comprehensively covered. This study can be done in individual diagnostic categories
like schizophrenia, bipolar or personality disorders comparing among violent and nonviolent patients having a
similar diagnosis, so that more specific factors related to each individual disorder can be obtained.
