Background: Interleukin-12 is a pro-inflammatory cytokine that plays a key role in host defense against Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection.
Materials and methods: A total number of 53 patients infected Mycobacterium tuberculosis and 30 healthy individuals as control were included in this study. Serum concentration of Interleukin 12 were measurement by Enzyme-linked Immune Sorbent Assay (ELISA) for each patients and control.
Results: The results proved that there was significant increase (P value <0.0001) in serum concentration of Interleukin-12 in total patients infected with new infection of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (0.011866± 0.0006 ng/ml) as compared with healthy individuals as control (0.0051351± 0.0002 ng/ml) and there was significant increase (P value <0.0001) in serum concentration of Interleukin-12 in total patients infected with multi-drug resistance Mycobacterium tuberculosis (0.0084277 ± 0.0004 ng/ml) as compared with healthy individuals as control (0.0051351 ± 0.0002 ng/ml). Also, the results demonstrated that there was significant increase (P value <0.0001) in serum concentration of Interleukin-12 in patients infected with new infection of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (0.011866 ± 0.00067ng/ml) as compared with patients infected with multi-drug resistance Mycobacterium tuberculosis (0.0084277 ± 0.00044 ng/ml).
Conclusion: Interleukin-12 plays an important key in immunological role in host defense against Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection due to T-helper1 and T-helper 2 responses controlled by the beta receptor subunit of Interleukin-12. Therefore, Interleukin-12 has good immunological role to limited of Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection.
