Reciprocating instruments can shape and clean the canal in a very short period of time.Conventional instruments nickel titanium instruments when used can lead to structural fatigue which will eventually end infracture. Torsion and fatigue through flexure were the main challenges faced by conventional instruments. Torsional fracture occurs when one part of the instrument is binding to the root canal wall and other parts keep rotating.Flexural stress can occur when the instrument is already weakened by metal fatigue and is built up. While in reciprocating instruments they experience no such fatigue and stresses because they freely rotate without any binding to the root canal. Fracture can occur at maximum bend of the root canal. The flexibility of the instrument plays an important role and the amount of stress in bending depends on the root canal anatomy and is greater in very much curved root canals. They are made of a special type of alloy called the M wire alloy. This type of wire shows that they have increased flexibility and resistance to cyclic fatigue and are made by an innovative thermal treatment method. It can show increased resistance to fracture. They reduce the working time. Elastic limit is not exceeded. They provide more comfort to the dentist and patient. Microbial contamination is reduced. They reduce the chair side preparation to minimum as they become pre sterilised. Single file with greater taper can be used to prepare the root canal completely. They have better cantering ability and always the instrument stays centered in the root canal. They can efficiently negotiate narrow and strongly curved canals. They have less likelihood of procedural errors. They have very less fracture of the instrument. Challenges faced are during the dentinal crack formation which occurs in root canal preparation. There is also the possibility of debris extrusion. This research is of absolute necessity to plan the root canal preparation. It helps to overcome the drawbacks of rotary system especially torsional, flexural and cyclic fatigue along with root canal anatomy maintenance.
