Charcoal has been used by the Indian population for a long period of time. In ancient days, before the arrival of toothpaste charcoal was used as the tooth powder. When a carbon-rich component is burnt at high temperature or chemically treated to increase its adsorption then it is called activated charcoal. It is treated to a high temperature to increase the surface area of the charcoal powder. Activated charcoal can effectively be used as toothpaste or tooth powder since they have the ability to remove surface stains.Activated charcoal will be very porous and may have very good adsorption capacity.Recently many charcoal based dentifrices commercially available, starting from toothbrush to mouthwash many oral hygiene products based on activated charcoal are available. The microbiological studies with charcoal dentifrices claimed lesser oral contamination. Activated charcoal has the capacity of detoxing the individual. It has been used as a natural detoxing agent for a longer period of time. Previous articles and recent literature were collected and the articles underwent quality analysis. The main aim of the study is to know the effect of activated charcoal in the oral cavity. And to evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of activated charcoal and to conclude whether it is safe to use activated charcoal as an oral hygiene product.
