Abstract:

Impaction of maxillary and mandibular canines is a frequently encountered clinical problem, the treatment of which usually requires an interdisciplinary approach. Success of the management of impacted canines starts from proper diagnosis. Other parameters playing important roles are age of patient, patient cooperation, level of canine impaction, inclination and depth of impaction. To find the incidence of impacted canine referred for treatment at the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Saveetha Dental college, Chennai. A statistical study was performed by obtaining the data from the patient's record. All the cases of impaction reported to the department of Oral and Maxillofacial surgery were retrospectively analyzed. Labial type of impaction was the most commonly occurring impaction. Majority of the impaction was observed in the age group below 18 years of age. Maxillary impactions were commonly found mandible impaction. Canine impaction is a unique type of impaction. Various different diagnostic techniques need to be adopted for the appropriate management of this impacted tooth.
