Prevalence of Periodontally Compromised Patients Among Those Undergoing Orthodontic Treatment

Author: SNEHA SREE. SREE.S, SUMATHI FELICITA, JAYANTH KUMAR VADIVEL
Abstract: Background: An increasing number of adult patients are seeking orthodontic treatment to improve their dental appearance and to maintain better oral hygiene. With adequate periodontal treatment it is possible to correct the malocclusion and restore a healthy functioning dentition. However, while orthodontic treatment can realign periodontally affected teeth, esthetic appearance might be compromised due to gingival recession. The aim of this study is to investigate the prevalence of periodontally compromised patients undergoing orthodontic treatment. The study included data of 198 periodontally compromised patients taken from Dental Information Archiving Software. It included patient’s details along with presence of pockets , gingival recession, blunting of interdental papilla, periodontal disease , habits, malocclusion and individual tooth variations. The collected data was analyzed using SPSS software. Frequency distribution was done. A total of 198 cases of periodontally compromised patients were considered. They were divided into two groups. Group 1 was class I malocclusion and group 2 was class II malocclusion. Group-1 consisted of 99 patients among which 38 of them were females and 61of them were males and Group-2 consisted of 99 patients among which 48 of them were females and 51of them were males. In the present study the most common periodontal disease was generalised chronic gingivitis, with 52.1% in group 1 and 47.9% in group 2(p<0.05). Our study concluded that majority of patients reported with chronic gingivitis followed by generalised chronic gingivitis, generalised chronic gingivitis with localised chronic periodontitis, generalised chronic periodontitis, localised chronic gingivitis with the last being localised chronic periodontitis in group 1. There were minor changes in the order group 2. Orthodontic treatment must be performed with care as with mild forces to attain optimal dental response and help improve function and aesthetics in periodontally compromised patients.
