The success behind a root canal therapy lies in a deep knowledge about the morphology of the root canal. Root canal system of teeth is least understood and studied by the oral anatomist. There are a lot of varieties in root canal morphology. The reason for failure of root canal treatment primarily includes undetected canals and incomplete instrumentation. False assumptions about the root canal anatomy of teeth may lead to misdiagnosis, missed canals, improper debridement and breakage of root canal instruments during root canal treatment. The aim of this research was to review the various methods used to study and understand root canal systems. The complexity of root canal morphology is a challenge to any clinician. Any attempt to perform root canal therapy must be preceded with a thorough understanding of the anatomy of both the pulp chamber and the root canal system. A number of methods have been used to examine the root canal including in vitro methods ranging from sectioning of teeth, metal castings to advanced in vivo tomographic imaging, which have been discussed in our study.
