Oral squamous cell carcinoma is the most common malignant epithelial neoplasm that affects the oral cavity. OSCC is a disease of adults and its most commonly presented as an ulcerated lesion with a necrotic central area surrounded by elevated rolled borders. This article overviews the essential points of oral squamous cell carcinoma, its risk and prevalence in different sites in the oral cavity. The data of 86,000 patients visiting Saveetha dental hospital during the time period June 2019 to March 2020 were reviewed and data on the patients diagnosed with OSCC was collected. Data was entered in excel sheets and exported to SPSS software version 19 by IBM and analyzed for significance. 51 patients diagnosed with OSCC were obtained and the predominant age group was found to be 41-70 years. The most common site of occurrence is the buccal mucosa which was 39.2%. Some of the patients were involved in habits while some were not which shows that there could be other etiologic factors associated for the cause of OSCC in non habit associated patients. This study concludes that there was high prevalence of oral squamous cell carcinoma in the buccal mucosa of patients and was more prevalent in males compared to females. Assessment of etiologic factors other than habits involving the various sites must be done for further studies.
