Prevalence of Odontogenic Cyst in South Indian Population

Abstract:

Odontogenic cysts are a group of Jaw cyst that are formed from tissue involved in odontogenesis. Odontogenic cysts are closed sac, and have a distinct membrane derived from rest of odontogenic epithelium. The aim of the study was to assess the prevalence of odontogenic cyst in the South Indian population. Records of the patient diagnosed with odontogenic cyst from June 2019 to march 2020, collected from the dental hospital management system records. The patient data were tabulated and analysed using statistical software SPSS. Out of the 11 patients, 36% of the patients were of the age 20-30 years. Out of which 54% were male and 45.5% were female. Periapical cyst which was the highest among the all odontogenic cysts. The present study reviewed the epidemiological profile of odontogenic cysts in dental health-care settings in south India and periapical cyst was found to be most common and have a predilection to the posterior region of mandible. The importance of collecting adequate clinical information regarding final diagnosis of these lesions and performing routine follow-up examination is further emphasized.
