Need of Radiographs in Extraction of Third Molars

Abstract: In dentistry , extraction is one of the basic dental procedures carried out by dentists and removal of third molars being carried out by experienced and skillful clinicians though it always remains a challenge for them. Radiographs play a very important role as an aid in the extraction of third molars.It helps the clinician to rule out the complications during extraction. The aim of the study is to assess the need of radiographs in extraction of third molars. The study was carried out in a Dental College in South India.Patient data was collected with the help of a software known as DIAS(Dental Information Archiving Software).The number of radiographs taken were counted by two observers and it was entered in excel sheet.All the negative data are excluded. Total radiographs taken were 1799 out of which 572 were IOPA and the remaining 1227 were OPGs. In the present study, it is concluded that majority radiographs taken were the OPGs.
