In women there is an increased prevalence of knee and hand joint osteoarthritis while men have a high prevalence of hip osteoarthritis. However hip osteoarthritis is comparatively uncommon in India .Joint weakness and joint loading are the two main contributing factors for development of osteoarthritis.Age is the most dominant risk factor for osteoarthritis .Radiographic evidence of osteoarthritis is rare in individual below the age of 40. Aging increases the joint weakness through certain mechanisms. Aged cartilage is less responsive to the stimuli of loading stress .Indeed because of the poor responsiveness of older cartilage to such stimulations; cartilage transplant operations are far more challenging in older peoples than in younger persons. The main objective of this study was to find out the extent of the problem of osteoarthritis in rural poonjeri, Kancheepuram district in the field practice area of the Department of community medicine, CHRI and to identify the risk factors so that a community based intervention later be initiated. The most common chronic disease among the study population was found to be backache, followed by visual impairment, hypertension , diabetes ,and hypothyroidism
