Abstract:

Arthritis is defined as inflammation of a joint characterized by pain, swelling and limitation of joint movements.
Osteoarthritis is one of the most common type of arthritis with joint failure & pathologic changes. Osteoarthritis
Cause disability and it is the fourth leading cause of years lived with disability. Osteoarthritis most commonly
affects the knee and hip joints; Osteoarthritis is also associated with structural abnormalities in the late stages.
Worldwide estimates show that 9.6% of men and 18% of women ? 60 years have symptomatic Osteoarthritis. The
major risk factors associated with the knee joint arthritis include elderly age, female sex, obesity, occupational
knee bending and physical labour. Evidence of genetic basis of OA is also increasing however no specific genetic
abnormality has been found so far related with OA. The current study was planned to find the prevalence of knee
joint osteoarthritis and its determinants in the villages surrounding poonjeri (Tamil Nadu) which comes under the
field practice area of Department of Community Medicine, Chettinad Hospital and Research Institute
