Worldwide, there are 1.2 billion adolescents of which 253 million reside in India. World Health Organization
estimates that many mental disorders start in childhood-adolescent phase, with a global prevalence of 10-20%.
Increased incidence of mental disorders among adolescents can deter a healthy transition into adulthood. The
main objective of this study is to determine the prevalence of depression, anxiety and stress among
adolescents and to assess various coping mechanisms used by adolescents to deal with life stressors. This cross
sectional study took place among students aged 14 to 18 years of age studying in schools, both government
and private, in the twelve villages catered to by Rural health center of Poonjeri, Kancheepuram District, Tamil
Nadu. A total of 312 adolescents, from grades 9th to 12th were selected by multistage random sampling
method. Data was collected by administering standardized questionnaires such as DASS and Kiran Rao CCL.
Chi square, ANOVA and Pearson’s correlation tests were done for analysis of data. Mean age of respondents
was 15.53 ± 1.10 with male to female ratio of 1:1.08. Equal distribution of respondents was present from
government and private schools with majority hailing from nuclear, upper socio-economic status families.
Overall, 31.1% suffered from depression, 13.5% from anxiety and 30.1% from stress. Significant associations
were observed between depression and gender (p<0.05), anxiety and age groups(p<0.05) and stress and
SES(p<0.05). Higher levels of depression, anxiety and stress were also noted in students receiving tuitions as
compared to those who did not (p<0.05). This study showcased the prevailing burden of common mental
disorders among adolescents and highlighted the need for further health education and awareness about
adolescent mental health in schools and the community.
