Author: ATUL K. NASA, ARTI R. THAKKAR, ROOP K KHAR, SHYAM SUNDAR AGRAWAL, WILLIAM SELVAMURTHY
Abstract: Indian Pharmaceutical Industry have more than 1.5 thousand crore of turnovers out of which Delhi contributes 3700 crore turn over. Not of Standard Quality (NSQ) medicines pose a threat to the patient’s health and reputation of the Country. Effective legislative framework is the only remedy to combat NSQ medicine. It can be prevented only if all members of society make a concerted effort. Manufacture, Sale and distribution of spurious/counterfeit drugs is clandestine activity. Manufacture and distribution is normally through un-authorised channels. Tracking and trailing requires concerted efforts. In the present study, authors have collected various samples of therapeutic drugs from Delhi hospitals, retailer and wholesalers and Bhagirath Palace (a wholesale market), over 42 months and checked for the quality aspects of samples. Over 42 months each month samples were collected from different locations. Total 1507 samples were collected and out of that 55 samples (3.64%) were found to be of NSQ and 13 (0.86%) found to be spurious. This data is fairly higher than the National Drug Survey by National Institution of Biologicals, Government of India (2014–2016) which suggests that extent of NSQ and spurious drugs for retail outlets and government sources in the country was estimated to be 3.16% and 0.0245% respectively. Therefore, it is required to have a proper vigil and strict cGMP regulations for supplying better receipt of quality drugs to the consumers. Further we have given the various recommendations and duties to be performed each stakeholder to control the menace of spurious and NSQ drugs.
