Phytochemical investigation and nutritional analysis of panicum sarmentosum; a traditional plant used for postpartum benefits

Author: IRSHAD UL HAQ, NUR AZRIN SHAHRIR, SAHRIANISA TOUFIK, AWENG A/L EH RAK
Abstract: This study deals with the qualitative and quantitative analysis of P. sarmentosum, a medicinal plant consumed without knowing its nutritional value. Nutritional value was analysed by measuring moisture, ash, fat, protein, carbohydrate, minerals (Ca, Mg, K, Na, Zn, Cd, Pb, Ni ad Cu) content and food energy by oven drying, muffle furnace, soxhlet, Kjedahl method and Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS), respectively. The qualitative results revealed that aqueous extract of Panicum sarmentosum contained flavanoids, saponins, tannins, phlobatannins, terpenoids and cardiac glycosides. Meanwhile, ethanolic extract shows negative results for terpenoids and cardiac glycosides. Quantitative analysis revealed 23.42% alkaloids, 18.51% saponins, 2.69 mg GAE/g tannins, 0.932 mg GAE/g phenolic content, 19.43 mg QE/g flavonoid content, and 14 mg AA/g vitamin C. Nutritional values indicated the presence 9.50%, 10.00%, 3.11%, 20.16% , 57.23% and 337.5 Kcal/g, moisture, ash, fat, protein, carbohydrate, and 337.5Kcal/g food energy, respectively. Besides, mineral content observed revealed the highest concentration of Na, K and Ca followed by presence of Mg, Zn and Cu in lower amounts. The presence of beneficial phyto-constituents and high nutritional value of P. sarmentosum suggested this plant can be exploited as a good source of supplements.
