Background: Epilepsy is a common chronic disorder depicted by persistent senseless epileptic seizures. The signs and symptoms of this condition often need long-term drug therapy. Levetiracetam (LEV) is one of the most recent AEDs, marketed globally since 2000. LEV belongs to a class of drugs known as anticonvulsants. Some patients experience side effects when using LEV to manage seizures. The side effects seem to be mostly limited to fatigue or tiredness, as well as a few reports of irritation and aggression. Most of the patients describe their tiredness in the form of lack of energy. Other side effects include irritation, pruritis, increased seizures, and psychosis. Minimal deaths have been reported because of LEV use.
Case report: The case of 68 years old retired man with two occasion of seizure currently taking 200 mg of levetiracetam also known as Keppra. He is also Diabetic taking 1000 mg metformin per day. Patient reported memory impairment and vivid dreams while on levetiracetam. First seizure experience was in May 2020 while the second was in June 2020. Both cases happened at night when he was sleeping and was taken to the emergency section in a hospital. The blood test showed nothing specific. A physician ordered MRI and EEG and none of the tests showed anything specific.
Conclusion: This case report recommends improvements in the reporting of side effects associated with levetiracetam and other similar antiepileptic drugs. Physicians should be encouraged to use reporting systems to ease the assessment process.
