hysiological changes in the time of pregnancy may imitate signs of early congestive cardiac failure and every health
care member must be conscious of this. Concisely, changes in the cardio vascular system will start in the early
stages of pregnancy, which reaches a maximum at 28 weeks of gestation. Within the first 12 weeks of pregnancy,
total intra vascular plasma volume increases by 30-40%. Red blood cell mass rises by roughly 20%, but there is a
comparative reduction in hematocrit with increase in volume. There is an average increase of almost 35% of
cardiac output, starting in the early stages of first trimester, attaining a peak at 14 to 16 weeks and remaining at a
plateau until child birth. During child birth, cardiac output will increase abstemiously with every contraction and
more significantly with each expulsive effort in the second stage of labor. Soon after child birth most of the
escalation in cardiac output falls radically. Peripheral vascular resistance gets reduced in pregnancy because of
relaxing effect of progesterone hormone on the smooth muscles. The consequent decrease in blood pressure in
the second trimester related with early stage in third trimester. The typical reduction in systolic blood pressure is
5 to10 mm of hg and the reduction in diastolic blood pressure is 10-15mm of hg. If the reduction here be
unsuccessful, then it should be testified that such pregnant mothers are more prone to develop hypertension in
their third trimester stage of pregnancy. A cross sectional study was done for a period of one year among
antenatal mothers attending the outpatient department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of chettinad hospital and
research institute, Chennai with the objectives to estimate the prevalence of pregnancy women characteristics in
relation to mean and standard deviation among antenatal mothers and to assess the risk factors associated with
PIH.
