Physalis peruviana Linn. (Family: Solanaceae) has been traditionally used as diuretic, relaxant, in inflammation, tooth decay prevention and as abdominal ailments aid throughout the world. The plant is reported to relieve hypertension, asthma, urinary problems and widely valued for its calming properties. In spite of a long tradition of uses, few scientific pharmacological work and no pharmacognostic standardization studies have ever been carried out on this potential plant. Unavailability of pharmacognostic standards for authentication of P. peruviana is one of the reasons for phytochemical and pharmacological reports on this traditionally used plant. Hence, the present investigation was planned with an objective to establish pharmacognostic standards for P. peruviana. The current study emphasizes the macroscopic characters, microscopic studies and physico-chemical analysis of P. peruviana leaves. Transverse section (TS) of P. peruviana leaf under the microscope showed epidermal layer, parenchymatous cells, collateral vascular bundles and anomocytic stomata. The different types of trichomes and calcium oxalate crystals were also appeared. The powdered drug showed different calcium oxalate crystals with vascular bundles. Abundant pitted xylem vessels and cubic, druse and prismatic calcium oxalate crystals were appeared under microscope. Abundant multicellular covering trichomes were found in the powdered drug. Various leaf constants were also determined. The results of the present investigation of pharmacognostic standardization of P. peruviana leaf could be used as additional database as identification parameter in the quality control of P. peruviana.
