Abstract:

Ocimum sanctum which is known as the Queen of herbs of India is an important member of the family lamiaceae for its use in herbal medication. It is most widely used in India. This herb is widely used in modern medicine due to its chemical constituents present in it like flavonoids, alkaloids, terpanoids, saponins, vitamins, minerals and many others. Ocimum sanctum is seen effective in reducing blood glucose level of a diabetic patient. It has shown effective result in treatment of diabetes. Hence prove to have got great medicinal value. Apart from diabetes it also showed significant reduction in the total cholesterol levels. Leave extracts of Ocimum sanctum leaves has been observed very effective in curing various diseases like stomach disorders, anxiety, depression, malaria and many more. It also gives immense relief in cold, cough, and fever. It also helps to treat severe headaches and indigestion problems. This plant is known as a natural healer of diseases as it has got healing properties. It eliminates toxins from the body, prevents gastric ulcers, and lowers fevers. It has a rich supply of antioxidants and other nutrients. Recently the Medical experts across the world got to know about its anti-flu properties. Ocimum sanctum enhances the defence mechanism including the ability to fight viral diseases. The therapeutic use of this plant is considered safe and without any side effects to the human body as it has got many antioxidant properties which a body needs to shield its immune system. Ocimum sanctum is easily available everywhere, it has different varieties and each has its own medicinal use and therapeutic effects. Ocimum sanctum is famous for its vital role in Ayurveda. The roots, leaves and shoots of this plant have many medicinal properties. It has got anti- ageing properties, antimicrobial and anticancer property.
