Herbal Approach for Mosquito Repellency

Abstract:

In today’s era vector-borne infestations are the biggest problem contributing to various diseases like Malaria, dengue, yellow fever, filariasis, chikungunya, etc. To prevent these kinds of problems, chemical repellent and insecticides were used but after numerous investigations, it was examined that these formulations causes toxicity to humans and cause irritation on the skin. So this review deals with herbal formulation which acts as a mosquito repellent. Plant-based constituent do not show any sort of toxicity in humans so these can be regarded as safe. Based on the literature survey, four types of plants were selected having mosquito repellent activity. The name of those plants is Azadirachta indica, Ocimum bascillium, cymbopogon citratus, and cymbopogon nardus. The extract of citronella was used as the main constituent as it is showing the highest repellence effect and this extract of the plants can be collected by soxhlet apparatus. The paper gives information about the mosquito repellency effect of plants and gives an idea about the combination of main constituents of these plants make a promising formulation in this field of pharmacy.
