Background: Hepatitis E virus is one of the viruses that have nucleic acid type RNA viruses. This virus is the
causative agent of hepatitis E in human and it belongs to the genus Orthohepevirus within the Hepeviridae
family. In an experimental study that showed that hepatitis E virus can infect human and non-human organisms,
this poses a real risk through the ability of the virus to transmit to the human host.
Objectives: This study was arranged to explore the ability of the virus to infect non human host using
enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for diagnosis
Animals and methods: This study was conducted in college of vet.medicine at Al-Fallujah University in
Fallujah -Iraq from from 1/12/2018 to 1/2/2019. Eighty nine healthy local rabbits were bought at age of about
2.0-4.0 months, with average body weight (1400 gm) animal where kept in cages of animal house of Veterinary
College, fallujah University. All animals where fed on the ordinary diet and green grass and tap water were
offered of preliminary period for 2 weeks. Animals were kept in cages specialized for rabbit and closed tightly.
All rabbits that apparently looked healthy were selected. Blood samples were collected from rabbits and
serologically tested for antibodies using the ELISA test kit to detect infection with viral hepatitis E.
Results: Results showed that among 89 serum sample of rabbits, there is only one case the percentage was
0.01% was positive for anti-HEV antibodies by using of ELISA
Conclusions: Hepatitis E virus can present in local rabbits in Iraq.
